De reactie van de Bisschoppen op de petitie aan hun adres was wel te verwachten. Zo reageren bisschoppen nu eenmaal in onze tijd, bang dat ze ergens hun vingers aan branden. Niet in opspraak komen, niet negatief in het nieuws komen is kennelijk belangrijker dan het heil van de zielen en het welzijn van de Kerk. Voor wie de tekst van de reactie via de secretaris-generaal van de Kerkprovincie nog niet kennen, volgt deze hier:

“Als de Bisschoppen willen spreken of corresponderen, dat zullen ze dat rechtstreeks met de Heilige Vader doen en niet met de indieners van de petitie.”  Dat staat er en dat lijkt ferme taal maar dat is het niet. Want de indieners hebben niet eens om een gesprek gevraagd.

Eminentie, excellenties, U mag rechtstreeks met de heilige vader corresponderen. Daar gaan wij niet over maar wij hebben wel het goddelijke recht om van u leiding te vragen, zeker als het geloof en de discipline van de Kerk in het geding is.

Er staan hogere dingen op het spel dan u lijkt te beseffen.  Het gaat namelijk om de hoogste taak van de Bisschoppen: leiding geven aan de hun toevertrouwde kudde, met name in voor de kudde harde en verwarrende tijden. De indieners van de petitie vragen alleen aan de Bisschoppen om duidelijkheid te willen scheppen in de verwarring: leven wij hier op Malta of in Duitsland of sluiten we ons aan bij de Poolse en Kazakse Kerk? U kunt ook proberen wat duidelijkheid te scheppen door de door de paus om helderheid te vragen en u aan te sluiten bij de “dubia-kardinalen”.

De vraag aan u, Bisschoppen, is: zwijg niet langer, laat uw gelovigen niet in onzekerheid, met name nu Rome, – u zult het niet kunnen ontkennen, – zelf een factor van onzekerheid en verwarring is geworden.

Wij vragen niet om bisschoppen die zwijgen of die nietszeggende briefjes schrijven; bisschoppen, die zich verschansen in hun bureaus en achter hun collectief, de veilige bisschoppenconferentie waar men het op belangrijke doch heikele punten nooit eens is en dus niets meent te hoeven zeggen. Wij vragen om Bisschoppen die tegenover hun gelovigen uit willen komen voor de waarheid. Niets meer en niets minder!

Gelovigen hebben rechten en Bisschoppen hebben plichten.
